Barrow County is ideally situated in Northeast Georgia between Athens, home of the University of Georgia, and Atlanta, the cultural and business center of the Southeast. From Barrow County’s geographic center, Athens lies less than 30 minutes away, Atlanta less than 45 minutes, and Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport less than one hour. The mountains of North Georgia can be reached in less than two hours, and the Atlantic Coast is a little over four hours away. Indeed, the location is superb.
Within Barrow County, two major thoroughfares cross, allowing easy access to all points. Interstate 85 travels through Barrow County’s northern section, while Georgia Highway 316, the University Parkway, bisects the county as it travels from Gwinnett County to Athens.
Barrow County and its six cities enjoy a rich history dating back to the 1700s when settlers moved to what was then known as Indian territory. Within the city limits of Winder is the only state park inside a county seat. Fort Yargo is enjoyed by more than a half-million visitors yearly, making it the second-most popular state park in Georgia. Fort Yargo features a 1792 log fort built by settlers for protection against Creek and Cherokee Indians, although today visitors come to Fort Yargo for its wide variety of outdoor recreation and scenery.
